Abacus Driving School is an Independent School which I established in 2007. I belong to the MSA and the ADINJC and regularly attend seminars, workshops & other events to keep right up to date with the latest procedures and best teaching/coaching practice.

At Abacus, I understand that driving is a fundamental Life Skill and believe it needs to be approached with care. I am dedicated to making the experience as comfortable, relaxed and smooth as possible. I appreciate that everyone is unique and learns differently and adapt my teaching accordingly. All this will enable you reach a good standard of driving skill which will enable you to pass first time, thus saving extra cost. You will leave Abacus feeling confident to deal with today’s ever demanding road situations and new horizons opening up before you.

Parents or relatives are welcome to sit in on the back of the car during a lesson – this helps students to get used to having an extra person in the car and prepares them better for the test where sometimes there may be an extra person overseeing the examiner.

Why do people say its “raining cats and dogs”? …
I believe it’s because cats and dogs are everywhere! They are also well catered for in the pet world with dozens of kennels and catteries across the country… but I offer something a little different for pets that are just as treasured, but who might feel left out when it comes to holiday care.
There are thousands of people in the UK who keep parrots, parakeets, chickens, snakes, tortoises, lizards, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils etc. etc. & I have created the Sylvan Pet Hotel just for them.
I wanted to keep all sorts of pets from a very young age but my parents were not thrilled with the idea and so begrudgingly I was allowed my first pet (a garden snail!).
From there it went to fish keeping (pond and indoor marine & freshwater fish), then a gerbil at age ten followed by a tree frog and lizard in my teenage years. Since then I have kept rabbits, hamsters, mice, cats, dogs, chickens and even helped to rehabilitate a fledgling crow.
After completing a Biology degree in 1999 I went on to study small animal care whilst working for two years in a very large exotics pet & aquatics shop in Devon.
In more recent years, I have had an exciting career with corporate jobs in Sales & Marketing for the Pharmaceutical industry and have enjoyed the last 7yrs in Business Development for the Travel & Tourism sector. However, both of these have kept me away from home for a large proportion of my working life.
I have now retired from the corporate world and have chosen to set up the Sylvan Small Animal Pet Hotel at our family home. I believe that my knowledge and experience of all creatures great and small offers you the best possible care for your pets whilst you are on holiday. Working from home means I am on site almost 24/7 to run a fully insured business for pet boarding and offers the flexibility to offer pet transportation in my “pet limo” if required.
The pet hotel is set next to, and within a small area of woodland (thats why we chose the adjective Sylvan as the name). We offer pet vacations in a peaceful, quiet rural retreat with first class accommodation provided within our secure facilities.

Lesley Knight HELP Appeal HELP APPEAL LOGO

Lesley Knight   The HELP Appeal

When Lesley’s son Tom was 11 he was involved in an accident and airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where the air ambulance had to touch down outside the police station opposite the hospital, as it was the closet place to land. Tragically, Tom did not survive his injuries. In the months that followed Tom’s death Lesley kept returning to the memory of a crowd of people watching whilst the paramedics worked to save Tom as they made their way to the hospital from the air ambulance. Lesley was shocked to learn that Trauma Hospitals and A&E Hospitals do not automatically have Helipads for air ambulances to land and quite often the air ambulances are forced to land on nearby roads, fields and parks meaning that there is then a secondary transfer for the patient increasing their risk for recovery.

6 months later Lesley started fundraising for the County Air Ambulance Trust and in a few short months had raised over £20,000 pound for The HELP Appeal, which is dedicated to the funding of Helipads. Lesley then joined the fundraising executive of the Charity and has continued to play a key role in fundraising for The HELP Appeal.

Since 2009 The HELP Appeal have funded the building of over 36 helipads across the country, which have seen over 12,250 landings. There are over 40 more helipad projects in the pipeline and as the Charity does not receive any form of Government or National Lottery funding they rely on the generosity and support of individuals, businesses, communities, clubs and schools.
